Cet Atlas d’un petit pays délimité origine d’une année en résidence de création sur une terre agricole au Centre-du-Québec, située sur le territoire ancestral de la nation W8banaki, le Ndakina. Nous l’avons fréquentée au quotidien à 3 km/h, notre vitesse de marche. Notre affection pour le lot 5B du rang 12 nous appelle régulièrement à revenir le marcher bien que notre droit de passage soit expiré.
This Atlas of a small parcel of land emerged following a year-long residency on agricultural land in central Québec, situated on the traditional territory of the W8banaki Nation, the Ndakina. We frequented the land daily at our walking speed of 3 km/h. Our affection for Lot 5B Tract 12 frequently calls us back to walk there, though our right of way has expired.

Les atlas, mieux encore que les cartes isolées, manifestent une perspective significative. L’Atlas d’un petit pays délimité est un objet poétique réflexif de notre lien à notre milieu vivant.
An atlas, even more so than isolated maps, embodies a point view. The Atlas of a small parcel of land is a poetic object reflective of our connection to our living environment.
Premier cahier : Opérations cadastrales
Marchant le périmètre du lot, nous avons tracé cette ligne continue de 2,5 kilomètres contenant d’anciens pâturages en régénération végétale, une terre cultivée, un boisé, une zone humide, longeant une rivière et traversant un chantier de construction. Le schéma de délimitation du terrain arpenté a ensuite été reproduit dans chaque zone de la propriété. Par ces manœuvres d’opérations cadastrales installées dans le vivant, nous réfléchissons à l’espace partagé sur ce territoire que l’on imagine pouvoir posséder en parcelles.
Book One : Boundary Surveys
Walking the perimeter of the 2.5-kilometer property line, we traced the outline enclosing former pastures and cultivated land, a wooded area, an active construction site, a wetland, and the banks of the southwest Nicolet River. A diagram of the surveyed land was then replicated in each area of the property. Meditating on shared space, our boundary surveys in the living environment question the perception of land as a surface to be parcelled and possessed.

À l’écoute, nous nous sommes laissées guidées par un cèdre indompté, le chablis d’un sapin beaumier et un vénérable mélèze. Offrant notre simple présence, au fil du temps, nos actions éphémères auront tracé les lignes d’un espace partagé.
Book Three : Witness Trees
Tuning in to our environment, we came to be guided by a cedar enjoying its freedom, a windthrown balsam fir and a venerable larch tree. Centering our ephemeral actions on presence and slowness over time, a representation of shared space took form.
